Machu Picchu is located in a secluded location perched on the edge of a cliff high above the small village of Aguas Calientes (or Machu Picchu Village as it is now commonly known). From the train station it is a short walk through the Indian Market to the intersection where buses are lined up. The first bus departs at 0520, and the last bus departs from Machu Picchu at 1730, don’t miss it as it will take you more than an hour to walk down. In the mornings buses depart every 10 minutes or when full. Once all the trains have arrived, departures are less frequent. The journey is approximately 30 minutes.

How do you Hike from Aguas Caliented to Machu Picchu?
It is also possible to hike to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. There is only one main road in Aguas Calientes which the shuttle busses use to ascend to Machu Picchu. Follow the direction of the busses along the river passing the Sumaq hotel on your right hand side. The road will then curve to the left where a bridge crosses the river, walking straight ahead you will pick up the path to Machu Picchu. The path roughly follows one side of the switch back system of the access road, so watch out for the shuttle busses as you cross the road. Hiking time is approximately 1 hour up, and 40 minutes down. Although often there are local women selling bottle water on the route, it is best to take water with you, plus a sun hat and sun block.
