Machu Picchu Open in Jan and Feb 2011
November 19, 2010The Ministry of Culture / Directorate of Culture Regional Cusco have recently announced that the historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu will be open as normal in January and February 2011.
The ancient citadel of Machu Picchu was closed for several months at the beginning of this year. Unprecedented rains forced the closure of Machu Picchu in early 2010, as the heavy rains undermined the stability of the site.
Thousands of people were evacuated from Machu Picchu at the end of January 2010, as land-slides from the excessive rains caused the train line to be closed.
The Director of The Machu Picchu Archeological site Fernando Astete Victoria recently commented “The Inca Trail will be closed as normal throughout the month of February. Routine maintenance on nearly 40 Km’s of the trail will take place to re-level camp sites, clean toilets, cleaning guttering, trimming vegetation and tidying walkways.”
This recent announcement brings relief to the many tourists and travel agents alike. Paul Jones Sales Director travel agent Totally Peru E.I.R.L recently commented from their offices in Cusco “Times have been really tough in 2010, and we have seen the lowest level of tourism in Peru for many years. We welcome the news about the opening of Machu Picchu in 2011, and hope that tourism re-covers quickly to Peru.”
