Located in the central highlands of Peru, Junín is a rugged mountainous region with an abundance of narrow and deep canyons. The capital of Junín, called Huancayo is located approximately 200 miles (320 km’s) directly east of Lima and is easily accessible by road. The region is rich mining area and controversy surrounds Mount Toromocho which was recently purchased by the Chinese mining giant – Chinalco, mining some 210,000 tonnes per year of copper. Although largely un-explored by tourists, the Junín region is an important bird watching area in Peru, and there are many hiking opportunities around Lake Junín and in Pampa Hermosa Reserved Zone. Pampa Hermosa Lodges offer expert guided tours in the area.
