Peru Guide – Importance Rating: High

The Puno region is located in the south-east of Peru on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Situated on the high Andean altiplano, the region has a cold and dry climate throughout the year. Lake Titicaca, which covers an area of 8,372 sq km (3,232 sq mi), is the world’s largest navigable lake, and straddles the Puno Region and northern Bolivia. Lake Titicaca has a rich history dating back thousands of years, of which the Uros Indians and their floating Islands are the most prominent. Each year many tourists visit this region, taking advantage of single or multi day trips out to the Lake. Popular attractions include a trip to see the floating Uros Islands and the fixed Islands of Taquile, Suasi and Amantani. Although the city of Puno is rather underwhelming, it does offer tourists a variety of good quality accommodations and restaurants.
