Overview of Hotel

The Sanctuary lodge is the only hotel located at Machu Picchu and its prime location is perfect for quick access to the ancient citadel. Situated adjacent to the main entrance of Machu Picchu in front of the shuttle bus stop, entrance to Machu Picchu is just 1 minute away by foot. Owned by the Belmond Chain of hotels (was Orient Express), the 31 room luxury lodge offers guests a choice of 4 different accommodation classes: Superior, Deluxe View, Deluxe Mountain & Terrace and Presidential Suite. The hotel also has a large private restaurant and bar and a single bed treatment room. The well-kept mountainside garden also features relaxing lounge chairs and a large hot tub that guests can use free-of-charge. A special lounge area (also free-of-charge), complete with comfy seating, cable television, internet and bathroom and shower facilities is available for guests that have checked-out. During 2014 a new yoga area will be constructed and all rooms will under-go a complete renovation.

Location

The Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located adjacent to Machu Picchu. Entrance to the citadel is only seconds away. Aguas Calientes is 40 minutes below the hotel, and Cusco is 4 hours by train. It is worth noting that although the hotel is well located for access to Machu Picchu, it is a remote location, with no other attractions, restaurants or hotels in the area.

Our Thoughts!

If you have some cash to splash then The Sanctuary Lodge is simply one of the best options for a night in Machu Picchu. The lodge is located 1 minute from the entrance gates of Machu Picchu, making it perfect for early morning visits (before the crowds), or a quick afternoon snooze after lunch. Service is as you would expect for a hotel of this level. However, it is worth noting that not one room has a view of Machu Picchu and many of the rooms and bathrooms are very small. From 6 am until 6pm, noise from the reversing shuttle buses is an annoyance. If you are looking for convenience then this is an excellent option, if you want value for money you may be disappointed. For the same money you could get a Suite at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Hotel, which is our preference.
