Overview of Hotel

Situated facing the Vilcanota River on the road leading out of Aguas Calientes, the Sumaq Hotel is one of only a handful of luxury hotels near Machu Picchu. Currently under-going a complete (2014) renovation the hotel offers guests a choice of 60 rooms across 4 floors. Room categories include: 47 Superior Rooms, 10 Junior Suites and 3 Sumaq Suites, of which 30 offer river views and 30 mountain views. All rooms come with hypo-allergenic pillows, alpaca wool blankets and high quality matrices. The large Qunuq Restaurant with a capacity of 110 people specializes in Peruvian-fusion cuisine, putting a modern twist on traditional Andean dishes. The Aqlla Spa, meaning “the chosen one,” offers a range of massage, facial, sauna and hydrotherapy treatments. Cooking classes, Andean Weddings and traditional Payment to the Earth ceremonies can also be arranged at the hotel. The Sumaq also has its own shuttle bus stop where guests can be collected and dropped off for transport to Machu Picchu.

Location

Located on the outskirts of Aguas Calientes village facing the Vilcanota River, the hotel is well located for visiting Macho Picchu. The Sumaq Hotel is 2 hours by train from Ollantaytambo and 4 hours by train/road from Cusco.

Our Thoughts!

We have mixed thoughts on this hotel! Its self-awarded title of 5 stars is not quite right given that it is lacking some of the fundamental basics of a 5 star hotel like: air-conditioning, king sized beds (only the 3 suites have king beds) and good up-keep of its gardens. We also don’t like the fact that the hotel is backed up against a mountain, and all the rear accommodations have no view whatsoever (see photo). However, what we do like is the classy new feel to the recently renovated lobby, we like that the rooms are comfortable, ample and smell wonderfully fresh (eucalyptus scented), and we do like that the hotel has an excellent restaurant. Pricewise (as with all hotels in town) it is far too expensive and in any other place in the world it would be a US$ 180 – 200 per night hotel. You won’t be disappointed if you chose this hotel.
