Machu Picchu New Entrance Rules
December 18, 2011Earlier this year in the month of July, the governing body in control of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the Ministerio de Cultura (DRC) promptly changed the entrance rules to Machu Picchu. The change which happened without notice took many visitors by surprise and left many unable to enter the citadel.
Change No. 1: Only 2500 visitors are allowed to enter Machu Picchu each day. For visitors that have confirmed tickets purchased in advance through one of the authorized agents, online or through a travel agent should not be affected. If visitors intend to purchased entrance tickets on the day, they may be denied entrance if the allotted maximum has already been reached.
Change No. 2: Huayna Picchu entrance tickets much be purchased in advance. Entrance to Hauyna Picchu used to be on a first-come-first-serve basis, however the DRC now request that tickets are purchased in advance when purchasing your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu. Spaces are limited to 400 people per day in two allocated time slots: 7-8 am & 10-11am. Due to the limited access to Huayna Picchu tickets must be purchased with several months anticipation to guarantee availability.
Change No. 3: Additional entrance fee to hike Huayna Picchu. Tickets are now purchased as combination tickets, i.e Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu together, or simply Machu Picchu by itself. A standard adult entrance to Machu Picchu costs S/. 126 and a combination adult ticket that includes Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu costs S/. 150.
Student Ticket Prices: In a press release dated September 20, 2011, the Ministerio de Cultura also changed the rules on student ticket pricing. During the peak season months from June through to September, student discount rates will no longer apply.
ENTERTAINMENT TIP: If looking for fun at night, or to watch sports during the day, or even a taste of home, visit the Wild Rover Hostel Cusco for great food, sports and beer! Entrance to their bar is free even for non-guests
