Lima Museum´s – Museo Larco

Located in the district of Pueblo Libre close to the historic centre of Lima is the Larco Museum Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera). Founded in 1926 and housed in a vice-royal 18^th century mansion, the Larco Museum showcases 3000 years of development of pre-Columbian and Peruvian history.

The Larco Museum has 8 exhibition areas plus a unique look into their back storage area, where visitors can enter the museums classified area, and see over 45,000 arranged and catalogues items. The main exhibition areas are organized as follows:

Gold & Jewelry – Typical gold and metallic masks, jewelry and ornaments used for decorative purposes or offerings.

Vault – A selection of fine pieces and ornaments hand-crafted using gold, silver and semi-precious stones. The display includes earpieces,        nose ornaments, headdress, pectorals, mini containers and masks.

Ceramics – This exhibition not only offers a comprehensive range of pre-Columbian ceramics, but also a didactic display of methods and tools used in the production of ancient ceramic pieces.

Metals Showroom – Moche, Lambayeque, Chimú, and Inca Cultures were advanced in the art of producing and crafting fine metallic objects. This exhibition displays the high level of elaboration and decoration techniques used by these cultures.

Cultures Hall – A step by step exhibition of the many cultures that existed in pre-Columbian Peru, covering a period of several thousand years until the Spanish conquest in the 16^th century. The hall is split into 4 different areas including cultures from the north coast, the south coast, the centre and the highlands.

Textile – An exhibition covering the evolution of textiles in South America, including remains of some of the first bags, ropes and nets woven from vegetable fibers, through to the later techniques of weaving with animal fibers and coloring with dyes.

Erotic – This famous section of the Larco Museum exhibits a selection of objects made by Rafael Larco Hoyle during the 1960s, as a result of his research into sexual representations from the pre-Columbian era.

In addition to the Museum, located in the terrace and garden area there is a café/restaurant. Set in a relaxing and enchanting ambience, the restaurant serves a selection of high quality Peruvian and international dishes including: seafood, steaks, pastas, salads, risotto plus a selection of starters, desserts, snacks and a kids menu. The Larco Museum is approximately 25 minutes in taxi from Miraflores (15 Nuevo Soles), the Larco Museum is suitable for a full or half day visit, perhaps combined with a visit to Lima´s nearby historic centre .
