Location

The El Mapi Hotel is located on Avenida Pachacutec (roughly in the middle), 2 minutes from the main plaza of Aguas Calientes (or Machu Picchu Pueblo). The hotel is 6-7 minutes’ walk from the train station and 3-4 minutes’ walk to the main but stop for access to Machu Picchu.

Our Thoughts!

The El Mapi Hotel was one of the first really good quality 3 star superior hotels constructed in Aguas Calientes. It opened its doors for the around 4 years ago and was the first hotel that offered a credible and affordable alternative to the handful of luxury hotels dominating the town. The hotel is operated by Inkaterra Hotels, a small but well established Peruvian hotel chain who also own the Luxury Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel close to the train station. Accommodations are stylish but more functional than fancy, but do come complete with comfortable bedding, a safety deposit box, cable television and modern bathrooms with powerful showers. There are three rooms types available: Superior, Superior Deluxe and Suite. Superior level rooms don’t come with tea and coffee making facilities and no room in the entire hotel has a scenic view. The hotel offers a reliable luggage collection and drop off service for transfer of luggage to the train station. Breakfast and dinner is included within the price of a night’s stay.

Disappointing news June 2014 – To our surprise (as a travel agent) at the height of this year’s tourist season the hotel announced major construction work on one of the accommodation buildings at the rear of the hotel. Complaints from our clients soon arose including concerns over early morning / late night construction noise, excessive dust and rooms that smelt of damp. Around this time complaints about the quality of the evening meal (included) also stated to occur. No one on the El Mapi Sales Desk is quite sure when the work is due to finish, but the end of 2014 or the start 0f 2015 was suggested. During this time, we suggest that you avoid this hotel.
