Getting there for Sunrise

Due to Peru’s close proximity to the equator, the hour of sunrise and sunset varies only marginally throughout the year (about 30 mins). During the winter months (Jun – Aug) days are shorter and sunrise is from 6.00am and sunset 6.00pm. During the summer months (Dec – Feb) days are longer and sunrise is from 5.30am and sunset 6.30pm. If you want to see the sunrise at Machu Picchu you need to take the first bus departing Aguas Calientes at 05.30am, getting you to the citadel of Machu Picchu around 6.10am. Often queues for the first shuttle bus are long, so make sure you get there early. Be warned that early mornings are often misty with lots of low level cloud that block panoramic views.
