Covering an area of 975,000 hectares and bordering Ecuador, Amazonas is one of Peru’s most northern regions. More than two-thirds of the land is covered by rainforest and scrublands and the mountainous landscape is home to the summit of Cordillera del Condor. Coffee, cocoa bean and coca are an important source of income for this region. This area is largely undeveloped for tourism, but offers several hiking opportunities in The San Antonio Conservation Area, south of the capital Chachapoyas.
