The Andean region of Cusco is one of Peru’s most popular tourist regions. Cusco the capital (also spelt Cuzco) was once the centre of the Incan Empire, and is rich with Inca history, temples and citadels, of which the most famous is Machu Picchu a UNESCO and World Heritage Site. The Cusco region offers many excellent Incan archaeological sites, and each year attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. Multi-day hiking in the region is also popular, with the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and the Salkantay Trek in most demand.
